Overview
The humble joint has become big business. Pre-Rolls just overtook Flower to become the single largest category in Canada, and they rank third in the US, proof that convenience is reshaping how people buy cannabis. One brand, Jeeter, takes roughly $1 of every $13 spent on Pre-Rolls in the US, a concentration you won’t find in craft-driven categories like Concentrates. Millennials lead the spending and the format skews male, but the real story is momentum: as infused and multi-pack formats spread, Pre-Rolls keep pulling share from loose flower.
Pre-Rolls are one of the most affordable ways to buy cannabis, averaging about $8 per item across Headset’s US markets over the past year, nearly identical to Beverages and a fraction of a Flower eighth. That low sticker covers everything from a single half-gram joint to multi-packs. On a per-gram basis pre-rolls actually sit above loose flower, since you pay a premium for the convenience of a ready-to-smoke, pre-ground joint.
The average pre-roll sold for about 6% less than a year earlier, one of the steeper declines in cannabis, as value singles and multi-packs expand and pull the blended price down. Infused pre-rolls, joints boosted with concentrate, anchor the premium end and are the fastest-growing slice of the category.
What is an infused pre-roll?
An infused pre-roll is a joint that adds concentrate, such as distillate, live resin, kief, or diamonds, to the ground flower, pushing potency above a standard pre-roll. Infused formats are one of the fastest-growing parts of the category.
How much does a pre-roll cost?
Pre-rolls average about $8 each across Headset’s US markets, though single infused pre-rolls and multi-packs span a wide range.
Are pre-rolls more expensive than flower?
Per gram, yes. You pay a little more than loose Flower for the convenience of a ready-to-smoke joint, but the low per-unit price makes pre-rolls an easy impulse buy.
