This analysis covers the full weekend (Friday 9/2 through Monday 9/5), and consists of recreational cannabis sales in WA, OR, CA, CO, NV, AZ, NM, IL, MI, MA, AK.

Sales Lift

In the US, Labor Day weekend (Friday 9/2 through Monday 9/5) saw an increase of 6.4% in average daily sales in comparison to the previous four weekends comparable to what we saw on Labor Day weekend last year (+8.1%). Sales increased from a typical weekend for each day during the holiday period. Friday saw the biggest increase (10.5%) while Monday saw the smallest increase at 1.3%. Friday captured over half of the holiday weekend's total sales making it one of the highest US sales day in 2022.

Category Performance

Almost all categories saw significant sales lift with Beverages & Edibles leading the way with sales increases of 11% and 9% respectively which is consistent with other holiday trends. Topicals also saw a generous lift of 8.9% compared to the sales totals of the prior four weekends. Capsules which is product category more associated with wellness than parties is the only product to see a decline in comparison to past weeks (-4.3%).

Discounts

We saw higher average discounts every day during the holiday weekend (18.4%) relative to a typical weekend (16.2%). The highest average discount was Labor Day Monday at 19.4% which is 22.7% higher than a typical Monday. Friday had the second highest average discount at 18.4%.

Avg Basket Size

The average size (in sales $) of a retail basket in the most recently completed month.

Median Store SKU Counts

The number of distinct SKUs sold in the median store in the most recently completed month. Median was used instead of an average to remove the effects of outlier stores.

MOM LSSG

Median store Like-Store-Sales-Growth MoM - The month over month growth in sales for the median sample store (for example, January 2022 vs. December 2021). “Like stores” are filtered to exclude any newly opened stores or recently disconnected stores.
