Colorado by the Numbers: A Market Finding Its Floor
Colorado gets called a "mature market" so often that it's easy to miss what's actually happening in the data. Headset's market data through June 2026 tells a more interesting story than simple decline.
Colorado dispensaries generated $94.6 million in June 2026, down 4.0% year over year. But the average item price rose from $14.18 to $14.82 over the same period, a 4.5% increase. After years of price compression defining the Colorado narrative, pricing is firming. Fewer units are moving, but each unit is worth more. That's what a market finding its floor looks like.
The category mix tells the rest of the story:
- Flower remains the anchor at $34.0 million for the month, down just 2.0% year over year, with an average item price of $13.80 that still ranks among the most competitive in the country
- Pre-Rolls are the growth engine, up 8.2% year over year to $13.0 million. At an $8.67 average item price, pre-rolls are winning the value-conscious Colorado consumer while nearly every other category contracts
- Vapor Pens hold the number two spot at $25.5 million, down 5.5%
- Edibles posted $13.2 million, down 9.4%
- Beverages held flat at roughly $1.1 million, steady while heavier categories slipped
For operators, the takeaway is that Colorado is no longer a rising tide. Growth is coming from specific categories, specific price points, and specific consumers. Knowing which ones is the difference between defending share and losing it.
What Cy Will Cover
Cy Scott co-founded Headset (and before that, Leafly) and has been analyzing cannabis retail data for over a decade. His session brings Headset's point-of-sale data covering billions of transactions to the questions Colorado operators are actually asking:
- Where is pricing headed after years of compression, and what does the recent firming mean for margins?
- Which categories and segments are growing in a flat market, and who is buying them?
- What can Colorado's trajectory tell operators and investors about where other maturing markets, from Oregon to Michigan, go next?
Colorado has always been the market the rest of the industry studies. Every state eventually faces the questions Colorado is answering now.
